Doane Women's Soccer opened the season on Sunday afternoon in Crete as they played host to Kansas Wesleyan. The Tigers scored in the 12th minute of play and made the goal stand as they won 2-0.
Early into the game, McKenna Rathbun (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) pushed the ball up the left side following a throw-in and centered a ball that found Celeste Galvan (FR/Escondido, Calif.) near the top of the six-foot goal box. Galvan collected and fired to score the first goal of the season. Doane continued to hold the lead the remainder of the half despite KWU holding a 5-3 shots advantage.
In the second half, Doane held the shots advantage, 7-4. In the 78th minute, the Tigers picked up an insurance goal off a corner kick. Savannah Franzoy (FR/Pueblo West, Colo.) sent the kick in and it deflected off a Coyote and then off the head of Desiree Lopez (SO/San Elizario, Texas) into the net for the goal.
Hannah Drolshagen (SR/Englewood, Colo.) and Grayce Southern (FR/Tulsa, Okla.) each played 45 minutes in goal, collecting a save apiece. Drolshagen collected the win on the combined shutout.
Doane will travel to the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., for their next contest. Doane leads the all-time series, 3-2.
