Doane Women's Soccer picked up a 2-1 win in Mitchell, S.D., on Saturday over Dakota Wesleyan. It was the first win in Mitchell since 2015 for Doane. With the win, the Tigers improved to 2-3-1 in GPAC play.
In the opening half, Doane was the first to strike as Abbie Hedgecock (SR/North Platte, Neb.) intercepted a pass and sent the ball up field to Michaela Thompson (SR/Spokane, Wash.). Thompson fired a shot attempt to the back post and found the goal in the 39' of play.
In the second half, the Tigers added to their lead as Denise Gomez (JR/Porter, Texas) took away the ball from DWU on a pass ahead. She collected and fired a 35-yard shot that slipped in under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead in the 54' of play. Dakota Wesleyan cut into the lead in the 55' as Alexis Thompson scored.
Doane out-shot DWU, 10-5, with shots on-goal sitting at 7-4. Grayce Southern (FR/Tulsa, Okla.) recorded three saves in net for the Tigers.
Next up will be a trip to Hastings to take on the Broncos on October 12.
