Women's Soccer Douses Flames

Doane Women's Soccer picked up a big win on Saturday at home as they knocked off College of Saint Mary, 3-1. The win was the first over the Flames since 2016 and the first home against CSM since 2011.

Doane broke through in the first half following a corner kick that was cleared away by Saint Mary. It was picked up by Brooklyn Mercurio (SO/Tucson, Ariz.) and she passed the ball off to Karime Maldonado (FR/Hutto, Texas). Firing from 27 yards out, Maldonado hit the ball over the outstretched arm of the Flames goalkeeper and under the crossbar for her first collegiate goal in the 36' of play.

The Tigers added to the lead in the 40' as Michaela Thompson (SR/Spokane, Wash.) sent a crossing pass into the goal box that skipped off the hands of the Flames' goalkeeper and Celeste Galvan (FR/Escondido, Calif.) was there to head the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead and her fifth goal of the season to lead the team.

In the second half, Doane struck again in the 53' on a throw in by Denise Gomez (JR/Porter, Texas). The ball bounced in the goal box and Thompson was there to collect and fire a shot into the goal for her fifth goal of the season to match Galvan for the team lead.

Saint Mary scored their goal in the 82' as Abbey Wilson put the Flames on the board. Doane out-shot the Flames, 18-12 for the game, including 12-7 in shots on-goal. Grayce Southern (FR/Tulsa, Okla.) picked up six saves in 87 minutes of play in goal for the Tigers.

Doane will have another important game on Wednesday, October 19, as they travel to Fremont to take on Midland at 5 PM.
