Doane Women's Soccer managed a few feats on Saturday that have taken nearly a decade or more to break. The Tigers traveled to Orange City, Iowa, to take on a Northwestern program that they have not defeated since 2011 and have not scored against since 2015. The road trip also required a Doane win to qualify for the GPAC Postseason Tournament for the first time since 2014.
The Tigers were held scoreless through the first half but they were the aggressor with an 8-0 shots on-goal advantage. In the second half, the Tigers broke through in the 60' as Michaela Thompson (SR/Spokane, Wash.) scored from about 25 yards out, placing the ball just under the crossbar. Thompson nearly gave the Tigers a second goal if not for a leaping save by the Red Raider goalkeeper.
Thompson took the ensuing corner kick and placed it near the goal where she found Jenna Tardiff (SR/Antelope, Calif.) for the header and a 2-0 in the 69' of play. Doane added one more goal in the 73' as Lexi Torok (JR/Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) collected a loose ball and sent a shot to the back post to give the Tigers a 3-0 victory.
The win clinched the 8-seed in the GPAC Tournament, snapped a six-game scoreless streak against Northwestern, and gave the team their eighth victory of the season which is the most since 2013.
Doane will now turn their attention to another road trip as they travel to North Dakota to take on Jamestown at 6 PM on Wednesday, November 2.
