YANKTON, S.D. — A fast start and a clutch finish powered the Doane women's soccer team to a 1-0 GPAC victory over Mount Marty on Wednesday night at Crane Youngworth Field.
The Tigers (7-5-2, 5-1-1 GPAC) struck early when Brianna-Lynn Ehia found the back of the net just over six minutes into the match. Celeste Galvan delivered the assist on the play, threading a pass through the Lancer defense to set up Ehia for what proved to be the decisive goal at the 6:11 mark.
From there, Doane's defense and goalkeeper Virginia Johnson did the rest. Johnson turned in a commanding performance between the posts, recording six saves to earn her fifth win and third complete game shutout of the conference season. Four of her stops came in the opening half as Mount Marty pressed to equalize.
The Lancers (6-5-2, 3-2-2 GPAC) nearly broke through in the second half, including a shot that clanged off the post in the 65th minute. In the final minutes, Johnson secured the win with a kick save on a Mount Marty attempt in the 88th minute, preserving the clean sheet and sealing the Tigers' fifth conference victory.
Doane was outshot by Mount Marty 11-8 overall, but the Tigers made their biggest opportunity count, converting their lone goal on one of eight shots on frame.
With the win, Doane continues its strong push up the GPAC standings heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Tigers will be back on the road this Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa, to take on Dordt at 2:15 PM.
