Women's Soccer Edged Out in Second Half

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Doane women's soccer battled through a defensive first half but couldn't hold off a late Dordt push, falling 2-0 Saturday afternoon at the Defender Soccer Complex.

After 45 minutes of scoreless play, Dordt (7-5-2, 6-2-1 GPAC) broke through midway through the second half. Brooke Marjama opened the scoring in the 64th minute with a shot that slipped past the Doane defense following a missed clearout attempt for a 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later, Karinna Tel added an insurance goal in the 69th minute, assisted by Abi Keltner, to secure the win for the Defenders.

Doane (7-6-2, 5-2-1 GPAC) was held to just two total shots in the match—one on goal from Savannah Franzoy—while Dordt tallied 17 attempts, 10 of them on frame. Despite the shot differential, Tiger goalkeeper Virginia Johnson was outstanding once again, recording seven saves in 90 minutes of action, including several key stops early in the second half to keep Doane within reach.

McKenna Rathbun added Doane's only other shot attempt, while the Tigers finished with three corner kicks and committed just three fouls on the afternoon.

The Tigers will look to bounce back at home in their next GPAC contest, continuing to battle for position near the top of the conference standings as they take on Saint Mary (Neb.) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
