Tennis Squads Drops Duals Opener
Doane Tennis started their dual season on Saturday with a match-up against NCAA Division II William Jewell in Crete. Both Tiger teams fell to the Cardinals, 7-0.
In women's action, Doane won one of the doubles matches as Ava Macke (SR/Omaha, Neb.) and Liz van der Torre (SR/Greeley, Colo.) teamed up for a 6-4 win. However, the Tigers lost the team point as William Jewell won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Singles action saw some tight, competitive matches. The No. 2 match featuring van der Torre, the No. 3 match featuring Ashlyn Kucera (SO/Grand Island, Neb.), and the No. 5 match featuring Kailyn Groski (SR/Papillion, Neb.) saw each Tiger fall by scores of 6-4, 6-3. Nina Ngo (SR/Crete, Neb.) dropped her match at No. 4 by scores of 6-3, 7-5.
William Jewell swept the men's doubles match with No. 1 doubles featuring Jorge Chevez (SR/Panama City, Panama) and Jose Purizaca (SO/Lima, Peru) nipped, 6-4.
In singles play, Chevez was downed in a third-set tie break, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2). Federico Infante (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Diego Infante each had a set go to a tie-break, only to fall in straight sets.
The Tigers match with Bethel (Kan.) for October 11 has been canceled. The Threshers had a player on the women's side qualify for the ITA National Championships.
