Women's Tennis Clinches Second in GPAC with Road Win
Women's Tennis traveled to Seward on Tuesday to take on Concordia in a pivotal conference matchup. The teams entered play tied for second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and the winner would earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The match took around four and a half hours and came down to the final set of the final match with Doane prevailing, 4-3.
The Tigers won the doubles team point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Maria Purizaca and Mariana Espinosa won, 6-4, at No. 1 with Liz Calderon and Grace Schroller winning, 6-3.
Purizaca won at No. 1 singles over Mariana Molano, snapping Molano's eight-match win streak and handing her the first loss in GPAC play. Purizaca won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Calderon won at No. 3 singles, defeating Alana Lopez Pagan, 6-2, 6-4.
The final match on the court was No. 6 singles where Kat Johnson was taking on Tessa Blough. Johnson won the opening set in a tie-break only to have Blough take the second set. On match point, Blough came in towards the net and Johnson hit a lob shot over her to claim the victory. The final tally was 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4, in Johnson's favor.
Doane will receive a bye to open the GPAC Tournament and will face either Concordia or Saint Mary in the semifinals on April 25 in Sioux City, Iowa.
