Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight from KWU

SALINA, Kan. — Doane University women's tennis earned a hard-fought 4-3 dual victory over Kansas Wesleyan University, using a strong doubles showing and clutch play in singles to secure the road win.

The Tigers grabbed early momentum by claiming two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

At No. 1 doubles, Maria Purizaca and Liz Calderon controlled the action in a 6-2 win over Rylee Frye and Hayden Bellamy. The duo set the tone with consistent net play and strong service games.

Doane followed with another decisive victory at No. 2 doubles as Grace Schroller and Kat Johnson posted a 6-2 triumph against Corina Salas and Alivia Sherer. Kansas Wesleyan salvaged the third doubles point, but the Tigers carried a valuable advantage into singles.

Purizaca extended the lead at No. 1 singles, delivering a dominant 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win. Calderon matched that effort at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, giving Doane a commanding 3-0 edge in the team score.

Kansas Wesleyan responded with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to tighten the dual to 3-2.

The match ultimately came down to the final two courts, both requiring third-set tiebreakers.

At No. 6 singles, Alejandra Prat rebounded after dropping the opening set to rally past Isabella Myers, 4-6, 6-0, 10-4, in a decisive super tiebreak. Prat's resilience clinched the fourth team point for Doane and secured the dual victory.

No. 5 singles also went the distance, where Isabella Castillero fell in a narrow 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 decision in the super tiebreak, closing out a tightly contested afternoon.
