Women's Tennis Opens Trip in Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Doane University women's tennis team opened its spring break competition Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Bethel (Tenn.) at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Tigers picked up a strong performance at the top of the lineup, highlighted by victories from Maria Purizaca in both doubles and singles play.

Doane started the match by claiming the No. 1 doubles contest. Purizaca and Liz Calderon controlled the set, defeating Bethel's Lavinia Anais Karadza and Paula Milla Becerra 6-1. Bethel responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Purizaca continued her strong outing at the No. 1 position. She defeated Camila Barragan Canas in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Tigers their first singles point of the afternoon.

Doane's second victory came at No. 3 singles where Kat Johnson battled through a tight match against Paula Milla Becerra. After splitting the first two sets, Johnson captured the match with a 10-7 win in the match tiebreaker to secure the Tigers' second point.

Bethel claimed the remaining singles matches to secure the team victory. Sofia Canto defeated Calderon at No. 2 singles, while Cloe Casado earned a straight-set win over Grace Schroller at No. 4. Karadza and Giada Ngoc Meneguzzo also recorded straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
