Women's Tennis Uses Depth to Rally Past Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Doane women's tennis team delivered an impressive comeback on Monday evening, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Hastings, 4-3, in GPAC action.

After being swept in doubles play, the Tigers responded in dominant fashion during singles competition, winning four of six matches to secure the team victory. The Tigers also had to overcome the absence of their usual No. 1 and No. 3 singles players.

Hastings took control early by claiming all three doubles matches. The Broncos won at No. 1 doubles (6-1), No. 2 doubles (6-2), and No. 3 doubles (6-0) to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Doane quickly turned the momentum in singles, starting with a strong performance at No. 1 where Liz Calderon cruised to a straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, Isabella Castillero battled through a tough three-set match. After dropping a tight opening set in a tiebreaker, she responded by taking the next two sets (6-4, 6-2) to even the team score.

The Tigers continued to build momentum at No. 4 singles as Alejandra Prat rebounded from a first-set loss to win in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 6-3).

Doane's comeback effort was capped by Elizabeth Roth at No. 5 singles. After falling in the opening set, Roth rallied for a convincing 6-4, 6-4 finish in the final two sets to clinch the team victory.

Hastings picked up singles wins at No. 2 and No. 6, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Tigers' surge.

Doane's resilience in singles play proved to be the difference, as the Tigers erased the early deficit and secured a key conference road win.
