Purizaca, Calderon Combine for Three Ranked Wins

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Doane women's tennis team battled through several tightly contested matches on Saturday afternoon but came up short in a 5-2 dual loss to Morningside.

Doane opened the day by claiming the No. 1 doubles point, as the duo of Maria Purizaca and Liz Calderon earned a solid 6-4 victory over NAIA No. 8 Line Jensen and Brooke Marshall. However, Morningside responded by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to secure the early 2-1 advantage.

In singles play, the Tigers showed resilience at the top of the lineup. Purizaca delivered a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles over NAIA No. 3 Line Jensen, outlasting her opponent in a three-set battle, 7-6, 0-6, 7-5. Calderon followed with another comeback effort at No. 2 singles against NAIA No. 60 Lara Heinrich, dropping the opening set before rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Despite the strong performances from the top two spots, Morningside proved too deep across the remainder of the lineup. The Mustangs claimed wins at No. 3 through No. 6 singles, including straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6, and a three-set decision at No. 5 to clinch the dual.

Doane's two points on the day came from Purizaca and Calderon in singles play, highlighting the strength at the top of the Tigers' lineup.
