Volleyball Wins Home Opener

Doane Volleyball made their home debut on Wednesday evening in front of a lively crowd and posted a 3-1 victory over Kansas Wesleyan. The win improved the Tigers' overall record to 2-3 on the year while they handed KWU their first loss, now at 2-1.

The opening set went to the Tigers, 25-20. Doane hit .293 as a team with KWU hitting .214. The Coyotes had one more kill in the set than the Tigers but committed four more attack errors.

In set two, Doane recorded five blocks on six KWU attack errors in winning the set, 25-18. The Tigers hit .189 to the Coyotes' .028 attack percentage. Kansas Wesleyan won a back and forth battle in set three, 26-24, as their hitting percentage topped Doane's for the first time in the match. KWU hit .094 in the set to Doane's .039 attack percentage.

The Tigers' blocking attack came up big once again in the fourth and final set to post a 25-17 win. Doane had four blocks on six KWU attack errors. The Tigers also pounded out 17 kills in the set as they hit .271 to the Coyotes' .065 attack.

For the match, Doane hit .192 from the floor while KWU finished at a .102 attack percentage. Kirsten Bures (SR/Odell, Neb.) matched a career-high with 21 kills and a team best .320 attack percentage. Taylor Sluka (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) added 11 kills as Doane finished with 55 for the match.

Jaime Renshaw (SR/Sioux Falls, S.D.) dished out 45 assists and collected 15 digs for a double-double. She also had a team-best two ace serves. Ally Wallace (SR/Franktown, Colo.) collected a career-high 22 digs, followed by MacKenzie Painter (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) and Bures with 17 digs apiece. This marked the first time this season for Bures to record a double-double. Harper Case (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) chipped in with 13 digs.

At the net, the Tigers posted 14.0 team blocks. Simonie Mendenhall (SR/Clancy, Mont.) picked up seven total blocks including two solo. Cassidy Tompkin (SR/Clay Center, Neb.) finished with six, Sluka added five, and Renshaw was in on four total blocks.

Next up for the Tigers is a Saturday doubleheader as they host a triangular featuring Dakota State and MidAmerica Nazarene. Play begins at 10 AM on August 27 with Doane and DSU tipping off.
