Two Titles Won by Women's Wrestling in Home Meet
Doane Women's Wrestling hosted their first-ever home event as they held the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Women's Open on Saturday. The event featured a little over 100 women's competitors.
The Tigers walked away with 23 wins and two champions from the 12 wrestlers competing. In the 101 bracket, Karina Vang posted a 3-0 record on her way to the title. Her match was the first championship match, making her the first-ever women's wrestler to win a title in a Doane-hosted meet. She opened with a pin of Alyssa Cordova of Saint Mary (Kan.) in 2:18. Her semifinal match pitted her against Dutchess King of Indian Hills, ranked No. 6 in the junior college ranks. She picked up another pin, winning in 1:22. The title match saw her defeat Jalen Bets of Grand View, 10-0.
Brooke Cox collected a win at 109, defeating Kylee Slyter of Baker, 11-0. In the 116 bracket, Emily Cano picked up three wins and Savannah Smith added two wins as they took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Cano defeated Ali Andersen of Grand View in her first match by pin in 1:40. She needed just 28 seconds to dispatch Kennedy Harris of Friends by pin. After dropping a match, she came back with a pin of Javanica Mickens of Indian Hills in 4:34. Smith picked up a win over Carysa Corrado of Friends by pin in 1:43 and of Mickens in 3:24 after having a bye in the opening round.
Winning the 123 bracket was Cristelle Rodriguez with a 4-0 record. She opened with a pin of Lauren Lopez in 0:50 and followed with a tech fall win over Emily Fergeson of York, 10-0. In the semifinals, she took on Liannette Ortiz of Indian Hills, ranked No. 2 in the junior college rankings. Rodriguez topped Ortiz by tech fall, 12-2. In the championship, she defeated NAIA No. 12 Larissa Kaz of Hastings, 11-1.
In the 143 bracket, Aevri Ciha and Andrea Jones advanced to face each other in the third place match. Ciha opened with a tech fall win, 11-0, over Kaitlyn Hain of Indian Hills, who is ranked No. 6 in the weight class for junior colleges. After a loss, she bounced back with a pin of Sidali Jaramillo from Saint Mary (KS) in 36 seconds.
Jones opened with a pin of Jaramillo in 1:54 but would drop her second match of the day. She bounced back with a win over Naveah Briggs, wrestling unattached, by tech fall, 10-0. Ciha won the third place match over Jones by pin at the 0:48 mark.
In the 170 bracket, Lamia Benn went 2-2 on the day. She opened and closed the day by taking on Suravieve Robertson of Indian Hills, ranked No. 5 in the junior college ranks. In between, she picked up a medical forfeit victory followed by a come-from-behind win over Gracie Goldsmith-Ding. She trailed 6-0 before getting two takedowns, the last leading to a pin in 3:42. Benn took fourth place.
In the 191 bracket, Jessica Villanueva opened with a win over Makinzie Parsons of Iowa Western, ranked No. 7 in the junior college 191 rankings. After dropping a match, she pinned Christina Page of Friends in 0:53. Her final loss came by decision as she placed fourth. Victoria Hernandez picked up one win on the day, defeating teammate Amy Parra by a 5-2 decision.
The Tigers will return to action in 2023 at the York Open on January 14.
