Women's Wrestling Competes in First-Ever Dual
It was a historic night at Doane on Tuesday evening as the Tiger women's wrestling team took to the mat for the first-ever dual in program history. Doane entertained the Hastings Broncos and the battle came down to the final match of the day with the Broncos prevailing with a 25-19 victory.
Both teams would be open at 101, setting up the first match at 109. Doane's Karina Vang took on Bemnet Tesfa. Vang would record four takedowns as she posted a 10-0 tech fall in 2:26. In the second match at 116, Brooke Cox took on Candice Brickell. Brickell recorded three takedowns, two of the four-point variety, as she would collect a 12-2 tech fall in 4:51. Hastings would receive a forfeit win at 123 as the team score moved to 9-5 in favor of the Broncos.
The anticipated match at 123 would actually take place in the 130 division. Cristelle Rodriguez and Larissa Kaz would meet up for the third time this year and the result would be the same. Rodriguez collected five takedowns on her way to a 12-1 tech fall victory in 3:00. Hannah Nix took on No. 14 Tabitha Wood at 136 and Wood collected a win by pin in 0:44. The Broncos led 15-9 after six matches.
Doane gained the lead back after a pair of pins. At 143, Aevri Ciha defeated Lisa Hoeflich in 2:14. Ciha gave up an early two-point takedown but went in front with a four-point takedown before finishing off her opponent with the pin. In the 155 match, Maya Blackman used four takedowns to set up her victory. She defeated Alondra Becerra with a pin in 4:00.
Hastings came back with pins in the last two matches to get the win. At 170, Lamia Benn was defeated by Taylor Rickley in 2:14. In the final match, Victoria Hernandez picked up two early takedowns but got caught late in the opening period as Abby Beeck got a takedown and pin at 2:34.
