Women's Wrestling Faces Several Ranked Opponents in Iowa

Doane Women's Wrestling competed at the Grand View Open on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. The Tigers picked up 11 wins from the seven wrestlers who competed on the day.

Three wrestlers competed in the Gold Division for the Tigers. Karina Vang took the mat at 101, Cristelle Rodriguez at 130, and Aevri Ciha at 143.

Vang opened the day taking on NAIA No. 6 Alyssa Quezaire of Missouri Baptist. Quezaire was able to pick up a 10-0 tech fall win. Vang came back with a 6-3 decision over Grand View's Jalen Bets. In her next match, Vang took on No. 7 Esther Walker of Midland. Vang was able to get out quickly with a 6-0 lead but a reversal into a pin at 1:46 would end her day.

Rodriguez opened with a pair of 10-0 tech fall wins over Cassidy Anderson of Central Christian and Autumn Flanigan of Augsburg. In the quarterfinals, she took on former Air Force Prep standout Xochiti Mota-Pettis, the 2022 59-kilogram runner-up at the US Championships. Rodriguez struck first with a takedown but trailed 3-2 after three minutes of action. In the final 30 seconds of the final period, Rodriguez went for a double leg takedown and nearly took the lead but Mota-Pettis would slip out of her grips and get a takedown of her own, followed by three 2-point rollovers to finish with an 11-2 win.

In the consolation bracket, Rodriguez defeated NAIA No. 8 Sophia Smith of Oklahoma City, 12-1, and Louisa Schwab of Menlo by pin in 25 seconds. Schwab is currently ranked No. 9 in the 136 division.

Ciha placed fifth for the Tigers. Her day opened with a 10-0 tech fall loss to Katie Langee of Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA rankings. She followed with a 10-0 win over Kennedy Brown of Providence and a pin over NAIA No. 18 Morgan Shines of Eastern Oregon. Following a medical forfeit win, Ciha took on No. 2 Emily Se of Southern Oregon. She was pinned in 49 seconds, sending her to the Fifth Place match against No. 3 Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp of Providence. Ciha would receive a second medical forfeit win on the day.

In the Silver Division, Lamia Benn picked up one win at 170 as she defeated Taylor Schultz of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 10-0. Makiaya De La Cruz received a medical forfeit win at 170 as she went 1-2 on the day.
