Ciha Claims First Title for Women's Wrestling in 2023-24
Women's Wrestling opened the season on Saturday at the Friends Falcon Invite in Wichita, Kansas. The Tigers finished third in team scoring, posting 82.0 points with four wrestlers placing in the meet.
Leading the way for the Tigers was Aevri Ciha, winner of the 143 division with a 4-0 day. She opened her season with a 50-second pin of Heidi Schultz of Friends. She followed with back-to-back 10-0 tech fall victories to advance into the championship match. In the battle for first, Ciha defeated Sara Souresjhani of Avila by pin in 2:51. Overall, Ciha outscored her four opponents, 32-0.
Lamia Benn brought home a second place finish in the 191 division, going 2-1. She received a bye in the opening round and then recorded a pair of pins to move into the championship. She won in 2:54 over Shan Briggs of Avila and 2:06 over Jolie Ziegler of Ottawa to advance and face NAIA No. 15 Lessly Sandoval of Ottawa. Sandoval picked up a tech fall win, 12-2, in the championship.
The Tigers added a pair of third place finishes from Aspen Barber at 155 and Kalli Sutton in the 170 division. Barber opened with a 17-6 tech fall victory and followed it up with a pin in 2:11 over Azana King of Schreiner. In the semifinals, NAIA No. 11 Randie Scoon of Ottawa was able to pin Barber in 2:27. She would bounce back with a pin in 4:48 followed by a 14-4 tech fall win over No. 12 Bailee Hawks of Friends.
Sutton picked up an 11-0 tech fall win and a pin in 1:40 to advance to the semifinals. She got caught in a pin by Amelia Frounfetter of Saint Mary (Kan.), dropping into the consolation bracket. Sutton bounced back with a pin over NAIA No. 17 Audrey Lockhart of Wayland Baptist in 2:35. In the final match, she defeated No. 14 Tiyanna Leal of York by pin in 2:22.
In the highest scoring match in the brief history of the women's program, Hailey Romero battled No. 20 Mohagany Casel of Wayland Baptist in the 170 division. Casel held on in the opening match of the day for both wrestlers, 22-19.
Tiger wrestlers combined for 22 wins on the day. Next up for the team will be a trip to Arizona to compete in the Embry-Riddle Mile High Open on November 10.
