Three Place in Top 3 of Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open
Women's Wrestling hosted the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday in Crete. Doane had 12 wrestlers of the more than 200 for this year's field.
Cristelle Rodriguez paced the Tigers with a 5-0 record as she won the 123 division. Four of her five matches took less than a minute as she won all five by tech fall. Rodriguez opened with a 10-0 victory over Dav'yona Beatty of Avila in 23 seconds. She followed with a 10-0 win over Khylie Wainworth of Wartburg. Her final three matches came against ranked opponents.
Rodriguez posted a 10-0 win over NJCAA No. 7 Danica Linn of Iowa Western. In the semifinals, she defeated NAIA No. 20 Tyelor Rozell of Friends, 10-0. Larissa Kaz of Hastings stood across from Rodriguez in the finals. Kaz, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, was able to earn the first points off Rodriguez this season before the Tiger wrestler closed out the match with a 13-2 win.
Karina Vang and Bridgette Sotomayor picked up third place finishes. Vang dropped her opening match to Calli Connally of Carl Albert (Okla.) by an 8-5 decision. She followed with a tech fall win, 10-0, over Graciela Reyes of York. Vang then pinned her teammate, Kimberly Navarrete, in 1:06. She was able to stand across from Connally for the second time and avenged her earlier loss with a pin in 1:15. In the third place match, she defeated Alanis Serrano-Rois of Waldorf by tech fall, 14-3.
Sotomayor started with three wins by tech fall. She defeated Daisy Scholz of Saint Mary (Kan.), 12-2, and Brianna Miller of Hastings, 10-0. In the quarterfinals, she defeated NAIA No. 19 Abbie Jones of Baker, 12-1. In the semifinals, she lost to NAIA No. 12 Mattison Parker of Texas Wesleyan, 9-4. She rebounded with a win over Jalynn Patino of Texas Wesleyan by pin in 5:49. In the third place match she defeated NAIA No. 10 Kaydince Turner of Hastings, 5-3.
Navarrete picked up a school record on Saturday with a pin of Sandra Gutierrez of Southeast CC in 32 seconds. It is the fastest pin at 101 in program history.
Lorelei Wydra picked up two wins at 116. She defeated NAIA No. 10 Mya Turnmire of William Penn, 10-0. She followed with a school-record pin over Ali Andersen of Grand View in eight seconds. It is the fastest pin for all weight classes.
Abbie Ahrens posted two wins by pin at 130. She defeated Lauren Tucker of York in 2:05 and Brooklin Kuester of Morningside in 2:02.
Andrea Jones won twice at 136, both by pin. She defeated Rachel Burns of Central Christian in 1:26 and Elli Turner of Friends in 2:04.
Hailey Romero won four matches by pin as she placed sixth at 170. She dropped her opening match before taking the next four. She pinned Jocelyn Ambriz of Southeast CC in 51 seconds. Romero then defeated teammate and NAIA No. 17 Kalli Sutton in 1:24. NAIA No. 20 Taylor Rickley of Hastings was next to fall by pin in 0:49. Romero topped Tanihya Wilson of Indian Hills by pin in 36 seconds before dropping her final match. She took sixth as she hit the six-match limit and was unable to wrestle the fifth place match.
Sutton collected one win by pin, defeating Kari Fuller of Upper Iowa in 1:18.
At 191, Lamia Benn won her opening match by tech fall, 12-1, over Missouri Valley's Tylah Allen.
Next up for the Tigers will be the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on January 5-6, 2024.
