Women's Wrestling Records First Program Victory at Hastings
Women's Wrestling traveled to No. 14 Hastings on Tuesday evening for a dual. The Tigers were downed in the first and last matches of the event but in between recorded five wins, including three by pin, to post a 24-22 victory over the Broncos. The win is the first in the young history of the program that competed in its first dual a year ago.
In the opening match at 101, it was a back-and-forth battle between Kimberly Navarrete and the Broncos' Olivia De Georgio. De Georgio came from behind to pick up a 15-11 win to give Hastings an initial 3-1 lead. Doane took the lead at 109 as NAIA No. 5 (at 101) Karina Vang wrestled up a weight class and pinned Izzy Evans in 1:33. The 116 battle featured Taylor Weber and No. 13 Adacelli Salaiz-Noriega facing off. Weber had the first takedown but Salaiz-Noriega took the next 10 points for a 10-2 win. The team points earned by Naverrete and Weber proved more than valuable when the final tally was totaled.
NAIA No. 1 at 123, Cristelle Rodriguez, extended Doane's lead from 7-6 to 12-6 with a pin in 37 seconds over Montana Strozzi. At 130, the Broncos earned the five points back as NAIA No. 10 (at 123) Larissa Kaz wrestled up a weight class and pinned Brooke Cox in 53 seconds. The 136 match-up featured No. 17 Bridgette Sotomayor taking on Savannah Turner. Sotomayor won by tech fall, 10-0, to push the Tiger lead to 16-11.
Hastings tied the match after picking up a pin at 143 as No. 10 Reagan Gallaway defeated Brianna Membreno. Doane went back in front as No. 20 Aspen Barber defeated No. 18 Lisa Hoeflich, 6-3, at 155. Barber was trailing 3-0 after the first period before picking up three takedowns in the second period.
Hailey Romero faced Taylor Rickley at 170 in the next match. Romero recorded two takedowns to take an early lead and turned the final takedown into a pin at 1:20. The pin clinched the win for the Tigers. In the closing match, No. 10 Marissa Patterson picked up a win for Hastings, defeating Kenisha Jacsaint by pin in 4:09.
Next up for the Tigers will be the KCAC Duals held in York on Saturday, January 20.
