Women's Wrestling Wins Twice at KCAC Duals
Women's Wrestling traveled to York on Saturday to compete in the KCAC Duals. The Tigers started with three duals in pool play and added two more after pool placement decided division breakdowns.
The Tigers opened with a 38-6 win over Morningside. Despite having two open weight classes throughout the day (109 and 123), the Tigers were able to pick up the decisive win in the opener. The Mustangs had four open weight classes (101, 116, 123, and 170). Bridgette Sotomayor posted the quickest pin of the match for Doane, a win at 136 in 1:29. Brianna Membreno won by tech fall, 16-5, to pick up her first collegiate win.
Doane dropped their second match of the day as they took on Jamestown. The Jimmies finished with a 27-19 win over the Tigers. Hailey Romero recorded Doane's only pin of the match at 170. She defeated her opponent in 2:06. Sotomayor and Membreno added 10-0 tech fall wins with Jamestown also forfeiting one match (101).
In the final pool play match, Doane took on No. 17 Saint Mary (Kan.). The final outcome would not be decided until the final match as USM rallied for a 23-21 win over the Tigers as Doane finished third in the pool. The Spires were open in three weight classes (101, 123, 130). Kalli Sutton had the team's quickest pin in the match at 1:00 in the 155 division. Sotomayor added a pin in the match.
Doane competed in the Bronze Division in the next round of action. They started with a dual against Friends (Kan.), posting a 28-14 win over the Falcons, with the match starting at the 130 weight class. The Tigers picked up three pins in the match, with Aspen Barber having the quickest one at 155 with a time of 1:59. The match was sealed on a Taylor Weber pin at 116.
The final match for the Tigers was against York. The Panthers knocked off the Tigers, 26-21, as the difference came with Doane having two open weight classes and York able to fill all 10 spots. The Tigers had two pins in the match, Kimberly Navarrete in 1:14 at 101 and Sutton in 1:16 at 155. Abbie Ahrens and Sotomayor added tech fall wins and Membreno picked up a decision victory.
Doane and York will meet up once again in a couple of days as the Panthers come to Crete on Tuesday, January 23. The match is set for 7:00 PM and is the lone home dual of the season.
