Six Women's Wrestlers Place at Spire Classic
Women's Wrestling competed at the Spire Classic on Friday in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Tigers had six wrestlers place in the meet.
Kimberly Navarrete took second place at 101. After a first round bye, she opened with a pin in 51 seconds. In the semifinals, she earned her second straight by pin in 1:38. Navarrete dropped the final match due to injury. She was down 3-0 at the time of the stoppage.
Taylor Weber went 3-2 at 116. Her two losses came to NCAA Division II Gabrielle Hampton of Fort Hays State in the first and last matches. In between, she had a win by injury default, tech fall (10-0), and pin (2:34).
Abbie Ahrens took third at 130 with a 4-1 day. After dropping her first match by a 12-7 decision, she bounded back with a tech fall win. Her final three matches were wins by pin (0:45, 2:01, 2:45). In the consolation semifinals, she pinned NAIA No. 13 Peyton Hand of Ottawa. Brooke Cox won one match, a 12-1 tech fall victory, at 130.
Bridgette Sotomayor took third at 136 after going 5-1. She dropped her opening match only to bounce back with three consecutive pins (1:33, 1:51, 2:14). She added a 12-2 tech fall win and a 10-0 tech fall victory in the final match.
Kalli Sutton took third at 155 with four wins. She won her opening match by pin (3:24) and took the quarterfinal match with a 7-1 decision. Sutton dropped her semifinal match but came back with a pin over NCAA Division II Paige Barber of William Jewell. She won her final match, 9-3.
At 170, Hailey Romero picked up a third place finish. She dropped her opening match to No. 18 Amelia Frounfelter of Saint Mary (Kan.) by pin. Romero came back with a pin in 34 seconds followed by a forfeit win. She then won back-to-back matches by tech fall, 15-4 and 10-0. In the final match, she received a forfeit win over No. 12 Aime Hernandez-Perez. Lamia Benn picked up one win by pin (2:07) in the division.
Kenisha Jacsaint finished in third place at 191. Her bracket was set up as a round robin. She went 1-1 in her pool and advanced to the championship bracket. She recorded a pin in pool action (1:25) before dropping her second match by pin. In bracket action, she lost to No. 15 Elisa Robinson of Baker (Kan.) by pin but defeated fellow KCAC opponent, Christina Page of Friends (Kan.) by pin in 42 seconds.
Next up for the Tigers will be the Midland Warrior Open on Saturday, February 10, in Fremont.
