Men's Soccer Nipped in Home Opener

Doane Men's Soccer played host to Kansas Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in the Tigers' home opener. Doane struck first but it would be the visiting Coyotes who would pick up a 4-3 win.

The Tigers scored in the 19th minute as Zane Boudreau (JR/Papillion, Neb.) received a ball from Jesus Maganda (SR/Schuyler, Neb.) and fired a shot in from about 30 yards out to put Doane in front. Miscommunication on the Tigers' side late in the first half would lead to a KWU goal in the 44th minute.

Doane came out quickly in the second half as Brody Mueller (SO/Liberty, Mo.) scored in the 48th minute off a centering pass from near the end line by Reynaldo Villafuerte (SR/Mexico City, Mexico) to take a 2-1 lead. Kansas Wesleyan tied the game in the 51st minute and took the lead in the 62nd minute.

Roberto Filpo (SR/Mineola, N.Y.) answered for Doane in the 69th minute as he scored to tie the game at 3-3. Mueller sent in a corner kick that was played out of the six-foot box by KWU only to have Filpo collect it and fire a shot to the back corner of the goal to tie the game. Playing a man down, KWU was able to regain the lead in the 80th minute for the final score.

Doane held a 17-15 shots advantage, with KWU having an 8-7 shots on-goal edge. Both goalkeepers picked up four saves apiece.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, August 25, as they host York (Neb.) at 7 PM. Doane leads the all-time series, 8-6.
