Men's Soccer Nipped by Coyotes

SALINA, Kan. – Doane men's soccer dropped a 2-0 road contest Tuesday evening at JRI Stadium, falling to Kansas Wesleyan in non-conference play.

The Coyotes struck early, breaking through in the 7th minute when Quatama Massaquoi finished off a set piece from Emilio Rodriguez. Kansas Wesleyan doubled its lead in the 35th minute, as Zachariah Younis converted with assists from Leonardo Palencia and Alejandro Diaz Castro.

Doane's defense settled in after halftime, keeping the Coyotes off the board the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Curtis Oberg anchored the Tigers with five saves, three coming in the second half to keep his side within striking distance.

Offensively, Doane generated six total shots, led by Diego Villarreal with two attempts on goal and Mateo Jelicich adding two shots, one on frame. Villarreal nearly cut into the deficit in the 46th and 54th minutes, but Kansas Wesleyan keeper Shae Wirt came up with key stops. Wirt finished with three saves to preserve the shutout.

The Tigers also pressed through multiple set pieces, earning six corner kicks in the second half, but could not find the finishing touch.

With the result, Doane drops to 1-4 on the season while Kansas Wesleyan improves to 3-1-1. The Tigers return to Kansas this weekend to continue non-conference action at McPherson. Play is scheduled to start at 2 PM.
