Softball Sweeps Concordia in Home Opener
Doane Softball played their home opener on Tuesday as they hosted Concordia. The Tigers posted a 6-2 win in the opener and closed out the day with a 7-5 victory to pick up their first sweep of the Bulldogs since 2015.
In the first game, the Tigers struck first with an RBI-double from Hannah Baesler. Concordia came back with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning. Baesler put Doane back in front in the bottom of the inning with a two-run triple. She scored on a squeeze bunt by Shelby Robinson.
Doane added a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Megan Elliott. Grace Dowding doubled in the sixth inning to plate the final run.
Camry Moore threw a complete game for the Tigers, going 7.0 innings and scattering five hits while striking out four.
Dowding was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Baesler went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Angelina Esqueda was 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Tigers finished with 10 hits.
In game two, Concordia scored a run in the first inning for the early lead. Doane came back in the bottom of the frame with two runs to take the lead on a throwing error.
Moore extended the Doane lead in the third inning with an RBI-single. Elliott pushed the Tiger lead to 5-1 with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Alex Burrough added an RBI-double in the fifth inning.
The Bulldogs cut into the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Doane picked up a run in the bottom of the inning on a Jadyn Hunt double. In the seventh inning, Concordia plated a run to pull within two, 7-5. With one out, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded and Moore entered the game for the Tigers. She induced a fielder's choice force out at home and a strikeout to shut the door on Concordia's rally.
Emily Haines picked up the win for the Tigers as she threw 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three. Faith Molina threw 1.0 inning, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one. Moore threw 0.2 innings, striking out one.
Doane had 11 hits in the game, three from Hunt as she was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Baesler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Moore was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Fremont to take on Midland on Saturday, April 1.
