Softball Drops Doubleheader in Sioux City

Doane Softball traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, on Tuesday to take on Morningside. The Tigers were edged in game one, 2-1 in 10 innings, before dropping game two, 5-1, as the Mustangs pulled away late.

In the opener, Morningside scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly as the inning was extended by an error. Doane came back to tie the game in the fourth inning on a single by Anna Prauner to plate Camry Moore.

Doane had an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. The Mustang defense came up with a big play at first base, knocking down a hard-hit one-hopper and recovering in time to make a throw to home plate to get a force out.

In the tenth inning, Morningside scored the winning run on a wild pitch. The batter at the plate had swung and missed, but, it had appeared the ball had been foul tipped in Doane's eyes. The Tigers did not win the appeal and the game was over.

Moore threw 9.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Doane received hits from six different players in the game, all singles.

In the second game, Doane was able to get on the board in the second inning to take the early lead. Prauner plated Moore with an RBI-double for a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run base hit.

A couple of Tiger errors in the sixth inning led to three runs scoring for the Mustangs for the final runs of the game.

Emily Haines threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk. Faith Molina threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing a walk and striking out one.

Doane was held to three hits in the final game.

Next up will be a trip to Orange City, Iowa, on Friday, April 14, to take on Northwestern at 3:00 PM.
