Women's Basketball Earns Hard Fought Road Win

Doane Women's Basketball went on the road on Wednesday evening to Omaha and pulled off two feats that had not occurred in recent seasons. The Tigers defeated Saint Mary (Neb.), 82-72, to pick up their first win at CSM since 2019. The victory also gave the Tigers the season sweep over the Flames, the first since 2017, as the teams had split the season match-ups each of the last five years.

The Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first four minutes of play. Saint Mary would break the scoreless start and close the quarter on a 14-10 run to pull within four points at the quarter break.

The Flames owned the second quarter as they hit six 3-point baskets to flip the tables on the Tigers. Saint Mary out-scored Doane, 29-15, and led by 10 points at the break, 43-33. CSM out-scored the Tigers, 7-0, over the final three minutes.

Each team made a pair of free throws in the opening minute of the third quarter. The Tigers caught fire over the next 90 seconds, going on a 10-0 run to tie the game as Mak Hatcliff hit a pair of deep 3-pointers in the run. CSM regained the lead with a free throw only to have Doane go on a 6-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. Doane started the quarter on an 18-3 run and would lead 60-52 entering the final quarter.

The Flames started the fourth quarter on an 11-5 run and pulled within two points, 65-63. Macy Holtz and Megan Chambers gave the Tigers a pair of baskets to push the lead back to six points. Doane would push the lead to 10 points by the end of the game by hitting 9-of-12 free throw attempts in the final 92 seconds of the game.

Hatcliff paced the Tigers with 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting, hitting three 3-point baskets, and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Holtz posted 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting while adding six assists and four steals. Libby Trausch added 15 points, hitting three 3-points baskets, and pulled down seven rebounds. Chambers had a team-high eight rebounds to go with seven points.

Doane shot 49.1-percent (27-of-55) from the floor and 44.4-percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range. The Tigers converted 20-of-27 free throw attempts. Saint Mary shot 40.7-percent (22-of-54) from the floor and 44-percent (11-of-25) from behind the arc. Their 11 3-point baskets were the second-most on the season. CSM shot 77.3-percent (17-of-22) at the free throw line.

Allison Schubert scored 15 points and pulled in a team-high five rebounds. Madelyn Turner added 14 points and Bailey White finished with 13 points.

Doane will return home on Saturday, January 28, for a 2 PM game with Midland.
