Women's Basketball Cools Off Midland for Home Win

Doane Women's Basketball overcame a cold-shooting day with a solid defensive performance to defeat Midland on Saturday afternoon, 69-41. The win gave the Tigers their third straight season with an improved win total in overall and conference wins.

Doane struggled to get going in the first 10 minutes of the game as Midland led 13-12 at the quarter break. The Tigers were 1-of-9 from behind the arc and shot 25-percent from the floor while Midland made 45.5-percent of their shot attempts.

Despite their struggles offensively in the second quarter where the Tigers were limited to 15 points, the Doane defense held Midland to five points. Doane led at halftime, 27-18.

The Tigers used a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter to increase their lead to 43-29 as the teams went to the final 10 minutes of action. Doane pulled away in the fourth quarter by shooting 55-percent from the floor and out-scoring the Warriors, 26-12. The Tigers did not allow Midland to score more than 13 points in any quarter.

For the game, Mak Hatcliff led Doane with 20 points while pulling in 11 rebounds. Rylie Rice picked up her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Macy Holtz finished with 10 points while leading the team with four assists and four steals. Megan Chambers matched Hatcliff with 11 rebounds to lead Doane.

Doane shot 37.3-percent (28-of-75) from the floor, 23.5-percent (8-of-34) from behind the arc, and 71.4-percent (5-of-7) at the free throw line. Midland shot 27.3-percent (15-of-55) from the field, 6.3-percent (1-of-16) from 3-point range, and 55.6-percent (10-of-18) from the charity stripe.

The Warriors were led by Sarah Shepard with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Doane will head to Hastings on February 1 for a 6 PM tipoff with the Broncos.
