Cold Spells Help Hastings Defeat Women's Basketball
Doane Women's Basketball traveled to Hastings on Wednesday evening to take on the Broncos in GPAC action. The Tigers held an early lead but would struggle to close out the opening two quarters as Hastings built a lead and held on for a 65-56 win. The win for Hastings snapped an eight-game skid and left the season series tied, 1-1.
The game opened with Doane holding a 7-6 lead at the 5:40 mark of the opening quarter as Macy Holtz scored all seven points. Hastings would close the quarter on a 14-4 run and lead 20-11 after 10 minutes of action.
The Broncos scored the first basket of the second quarter only to see Doane answer with a 9-0 run to pull within two points, 22-20. Hastings countered with a 9-0 run and a 16-3 run over the final 7:24 to take a 38-23 lead into halftime.
A pair of 6-0 runs in the third quarter allowed Doane to pull within five points, 48-43, with 2:37 to play. Hastings was able to add two points to the lead by the end of the quarter, 52-45.
The fourth quarter started with the Broncos opening with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to double figures. Doane followed with an 11-2 run to pull within three points, 59-56, with 1:18 to play. Hastings would hold Doane scoreless the rest of the way while closing the game on a 6-0 run.
Mak Hatcliff led the Tigers with 15 points. Holtz added 13 points and Megan Chambers finished with 11 points. Rylie Rice had a team-high eight rebounds and Libby Trausch finished with six assists to lead Doane.
Doane shot 34-percent for the game and 22.2-percent from behind the arc. They were 18-of-23 at the free throw line for 78.3-percent.
Allison Bauer led Hastings with 18 points, seven above her season average, while Miriam Miller and Dawson Knode were near triple their season averages with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tigers will travel to Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern on Saturday, February 4, at 2 PM.
