Women's Basketball Hits from Deep in Road Win
Doane Women's Basketball went on the road on Wednesday evening and hit 10 3-point baskets in the first half as they defeated Mount Marty, 74-57. The win guaranteed the Tigers eighth place in the GPAC, outright, as they recently clinched their first postseason appearance since 2017.
Mount Marty held an early lead, 14-8, at the midway point. Doane finished the quarter on a 14-5 run, hitting four 3-point baskets, to take a 22-19 advantage after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Tigers opened with a 17-4 run to take a 39-23 lead. The two teams exchanged baskets on the next four possessions but for Doane, Libby Trausch hit a pair of 3-point baskets to push the lead to 18 points, the largest in the first half for the Tigers. Mount Marty closed the half on a 7-0 run as Doane led 45-34.
The third quarter was low-scoring with Doane pushing their lead to 15 points, 58-43. Both teams made four field goals in the quarter with the Tigers adding three points from the free throw line.
In the final quarter, Doane started on a 10-0 run to build their largest lead of the game at 25 points, 68-43. The Lancers came back with an 8-0 run over a three minute span. Both teams scored six points over the final three minutes to close out the game.
Mak Hatcliff led Doane with 19 points while Rylie Rice finished with 16 points and Trausch posted 12. Rice and Trausch combined to hit eight of the team's 14 3-point baskets. Macy Holtz added 10 points to give the Tigers four players in double-figures. Rice led the team with nine rebounds while Holtz and Kali Staples led the way with three assists each. On the defensive end, Megan Chambers recorded a career-high four blocked shots and picked up three steals.
Doane will close out the regular season on Saturday, February 18, as they play host to Briar Cliff at 2 PM in the Haddix Center. Senior Day recognition will take place between games.
