Women's Golf Rallies to Claim First Conference Title in Program History
Women's Golf mounted an impressive comeback on the first day of the GPAC Championships and then did so on the final few holes of the second day to claim the school's first-ever conference championship in the sport. The Tigers won the conference title with a 54-hole score of 955 (327-317-311), a GPAC record, edging out Dakota Wesleyan by three strokes.
Action on Monday in Cairo, Nebraska, at Centura Hills GC started slow for Doane as they posted an opening round team score of 327 and trailed Dakota Wesleyan by 12 strokes. The first day of action saw the women play 36 holes and midway into the second round, Doane stumbled to an 18-stroke deficit. With nine holes to play on the first day, the Tigers caught fire on the back-9 while Dakota Wesleyan started to struggle. Doane made up the 18-shot difference and pulled into a tie going into the final round on Tuesday.
Round three went back and forth early on with the two teams tied after the first nine holes. The start of the back-9 was not to Doane's favor as they fell behind by five strokes. The Tigers were able to get a few strokes back and trailed by two strokes entering the 16th hole. Connie Jarm and Sydney Streeter both birdied the 16th hole and the Tigers picked up one stroke on DWU and trailed by one entering the 17th hole. Doane's four players that scored on the day all picked up a par on 17 while DWU had a bogey, leaving the teams tied going into the final hole. Dakota Wesleyan had a double bogey on the 18th hole and finished the final hole at one-over par. Doane, on the other hand, recorded two birdies for a three-shot swing to win the conference title.
Jarm played the final nine holes of the tournament at even-par and her birdie on the 18th hole sealed the win for the Tigers and also clinched second place outright by one stroke. She finished with a 54-hole score of 233 (81-76-76), a school record. Laila Saunders tied for sixth with a 238 (80-79-79) and posted four birdies, tied for ninth-most in the tournament.
Kaitlyn Dumler tied for eighth with a 239 (82-77-80). She recorded five birdies in the tournament, tied for second-most. Sydney Streeter tied for 15th with a 246 (84-85-77). On the Par 4 holes, she tied for ninth in scoring at +12. Tia Phaisan tied for 23rd with a 252 (85-88-79). She recorded back-to-back pars on the final two holes to help the Tiger rally, finishing with 23 pars in the tournament.
Head Coach Jim Danson was recognized by the conference coaches as the GPAC Coach of the Year following the meet.
With the win, Doane has qualified for the NAIA National Championships in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on May 13-16. The tournament will be held at Eagle Crest GC.
