Men's Basketball Rallies from Double Digits for Another Win
Doane Men's Basketball erased a first half double-digit deficit for the second straight game as they posted a 76-72 overtime win over previously unbeaten Morningside on Tuesday evening. The Tigers' equaled a mark last accomplished in 1968 by winning back-to-back overtime games.
Morningside led by 17 points, 38-21, with 3:53 to play in the first half. The Mustangs led 40-26 at the halftime break as they hit 55.6-percent of their shot attempts. Doane was limited to 32.4-percent shooting from the floor.
Doane used a 14-5 run to cut the Morningside lead to single digits five minutes into the second half. The Tigers pulled within a point with 2:24 to play following back-to-back baskets by Cooper Peterson (JR/Edmond, Okla.). A free throw and a layup by the Mustangs pushed the lead back to four points, 65-61, with 1:42 to play.
On Doane's next possession, the Tigers and Mustangs tied up the basketball resulting in a jump ball. The Tigers kept possession with the shot clock winding down. The inbounds pass went into Alec Oberhauser (SR/Parkersburg, Iowa) beyond the 3-point line and he took one dribble and pulled up for a shot attempt, knocking down a 3-pointer to bring the Tigers back within one point.
The next Mustang possession resulted in a turnover as Ben Renshaw (SO/Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up a steal and was fouled. He went to the free throw line and made one of his free throw attempts to tie the game with 54 seconds left. Morningside was 0-of-2 from the floor in the final minute while Doane had a turnover resulting in the game going to overtime.
In the extra period, Doane took the lead with a pair of Brady Timm (SO/Yutan, Neb.) free throws. Morningside took the lead back with a 3-point basket with 3:30 to play. Cooper Sheldon (JR/Loveland, Colo.) put Doane back in front at the 2:22 mark with a layup as he was left open under the back on a double-team attempt on Oberhauser.
Following a pair of scoreless Mustang possessions, Sheldon added to the Doane lead with a jumper at the 1:08 mark as the shot clock was down to three seconds to put the Tigers up three points, 71-68. A pair of Morningside free throws brought the lead back to one point but Oberhauser answered with a layup with 28 seconds left. The Mustangs countered with a quick layup with 19 seconds to play. Doane made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win.
Sheldon scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Tigers. Timm added 15 points and Oberhauser finished with 14 points and six assists. Sheldon and Oberhauser recorded nine rebounds apiece for the Tigers.
Doane shot 50-percent from the floor in the second half and overtime while holding Morningside to 30-percent over the same stretch.
Ely Doble led Morningside with 18 points and Joey Skoff added 16 points.
Doane will travel to Manhattan, Kan., on Monday, November 28, to take on Manhattan Christian College.
