Midland Dials in from Long-Distance to Top Men's Basketball
Doane Men's Basketball opened the 2023 slate with a road trip on Wednesday evening to Fremont to take on Midland. The Tigers jumped out early but the host Warriors were too much on this night as Doane fell, 89-74.
The first three minutes of the game belonged to the Tigers as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Midland followed with a 5-0 run and a 7-0 run over the next seven minutes as they tied the score at 14-all at the 10:48 mark of the first half. Doane regained the lead and extended it to seven points, 31-24, with 7:05 to play.
The Warriors would answer back with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 32-31, only to see Doane take the lead back with a 4-0 run. Midland added another big run, out-scoring the Tigers 9-0 over a three minute span. Doane trailed at the break, 41-37.
The duo of Brady Timm and David Mascarenas kept the Tigers close early in the second half. They combined for the first 14 points of the 2nd half as the Tigers trailed by two points, 53-51, with 13:15 to play. Midland used four 3-point baskets over the next five minutes to push their lead to double-figures, 69-58.
Alec Oberhauser scored on the next Tiger possession at the 8:11 mark to bring the lead back to single digits while hitting a milestone basket. The two-point bucket pushed Oberhauser's career scoring total over 1,000 points between his time at Ellsworth CC and Doane.
Midland would match their largest run of the game with another 9-0 run as they took their largest lead of the game, 78-60. Over the next three minutes, Doane would go on a 14-4 run to trim the deficit to eight points, 82-74, as Timm scored nine of the team's points. The Warriors closed the game with a 7-0 run.
Timm led the Tigers on the night with 28 points and three steals. Oberhauser finished with 17 points and eight assists while Mascarenas posted a career-high 12 points. Cooper Sheldon led the way with eight rebounds.
Doane shot 42-percent (27-of-64) from the floor and 30-percent (9-of-30) from behind the arc. They converted 69-percent (11-of-16) at the free throw line. Midland shot 50-percent (33-of-66) from the field and made a season-high 14 3-point baskets. The Warriors entered the game averaging six 3-point baskets a game and shooting 33-percent but hit 56-percent (14-of-25) on the night. At the free throw line, Midland made 60-percent (9-of-15) of their attempts.
The Warriors were led by Jake Orr with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Midland took full advantage of Doane's 14 turnovers, out-scoring the Tigers 27-11 in points off turnovers.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Briar Cliff. Tip-off is set for 3:45 PM on Saturday, January 7.
