DWU Starts Fast, Holds Off Men's Basketball Late
Doane Men's Basketball hosted Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon and ran into a second straight day of their opponent getting hot from beyond the arc. DWU hit 14 3-point baskets in order to pick up an 80-69 win in Crete.
Dakota Wesleyan had an unbelievably hot first half, shooting 60-percent from the floor (18-of-30) while hitting 64.7-percent behind the arc (11-of-17). The hot shooting gave DWU a 50-27 lead at the break.
In the second half of play, DWU cooled off and was closer to their season averages which would allow Doane to close the gap as they started to get hot from the floor. The Tigers shot 58-percent in the final 20 minutes, hitting six 3-point baskets.
Doane slowly chipped away at the lead, never stringing together more than a 5-0 run, but putting together several consecutive baskets. With 7:55 left in the half, the Tigers had pulled within single-digits. The lead fluctuated between nine and 12 points over the next four minutes, with Doane back within nine points, 70-61, with 4:17 to play.
The Doane defense would force DWU into three turnovers on their next four possessions but they were unable to cut into the lead during the stretch. The closest the Tigers would get in the final two and half minutes was eight points.
Brady Timm led the team with 30 points on the night, hitting six of the team's nine 3-point baskets. Alec Oberhauser added 18 points and seven assists. Cooper Sheldon led the team with six rebounds.
Doane will return to action in one week, on Saturday, January 28, as they play host to Midland at 3:45 PM.
