Softball Splits on Final Day in Arizona

Doane Softball returned to the softball diamonds in Arizona following a day off and split action as they moved to 5-1 overall during their Spring Break trip. The Tigers defeated Valley City State (N.D.) in the first game of the day, 7-1, before falling to Cottey (Mo.), 10-1 in five innings.

Camry Moore started the scoring for the Tigers in the first inning with an RBI-double. Doane was held off the board until the fourth inning when they pushed six runs across the plate. Hannah Baesler had an RBI-single and Moore added a two-run single to put Doane up 4-0. Megan Elliott added an RBI-single and Anna Prauner delivered a two-run single to take a seven run lead.

The Vikings scored their lone run in the game in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out single.

Doane finished with seven hits in the game, three from Moore as she added a run scored and three driven in.

In the pitcher's circle, Moore drew the start and posted a complete-game victory. She threw 7.0 innings, scattering nine hits with three strikeouts.

Errors plagued the Tigers in their game with Cottey. Doane committed five errors which led to nine unearned runs.

Doane scored the first run of the game as Moore delivered a two-out double to score the Tigers' run. Two errors to open the bottom of the first inning would allow Cottey to score four runs to take the lead.

In the second inning, a two-out error brought in a pair of runs for the Comets. Three of the four runs Cottey scored in the fifth inning were unearned as the mercy run rule came into play.

Faith Molina took the loss as she went 0.2 innings, allowing four unearned runs on four hits. Emily Haines threw 4.0 innings, allowing six runs (five unearned) on seven hits while striking out one.

Doane finished with four different players collecting a hit on offense.

The Tigers' final game of the trip against Viterbo on Thursday was canceled due to rain. Next up for the Tigers will be the conference opener at Morningside on March 22.
