Softball Splits at Hastings to Open GPAC Play

Doane Softball opened conference play on Saturday with a trip to Hastings. The Tigers rolled in the opener with a 10-0 win in five innings but were unable to overcome one tough defensive inning as they dropped game two, 9-8.

In game one, Doane jumped out early with six runs in the first inning. Hannah Baesler drove in Grace Dowding for the first run of the game with a double. She came in to score on a two-run home run by Camry Moore. A pair of walks set up a three-run home run by Jayden Young.

Doane added four runs in the fourth inning on five hits. Dowding had an RBI-double and Baesler had a sacrifice fly. Shelby Robinson followed with an RBI-double and Megan Elliott added an RBI-single.

Moore picked up the win in the circle with 5.0 shutout innings. She allowed six hits and struck out two.

Young was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Dowding added a 2-for-4 outing with two runs scored as the team finished with 10 hits.

In game two, Hastings scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning behind a pair of doubles. Doane came back to take the lead with four runs in the third inning on a Moore three-run home run.

In the bottom of the third, Hastings pushed eight runs across the plate on four hits and five walks. Six of the runs scored with two outs for the Broncos.

Doane came back with three runs in the fourth inning as Moore had a sacrifice fly and Anna Prauner had a two-run double. In the seventh, Doane pulled within a run on a Dowding RBI-single and had the tying and go-ahead run in scoring position when the Broncos were able to record the final out to hold off the Tigers.

Emily Haines started for Doane and went 2.0-plus innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Faith Molina finished with 0.2 innings, allowing six runs on one hit and five walks with a strikeout. Moore threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven.

Dowding was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Prauner was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Moore was 1-for-1 with four RBI.

Doane will make their home debut on Tuesday, March 28, when the Tigers play host to Concordia at 3 PM.
